Privacy
No account, no ads, no tracking. Good Radar sends a place only where an answer needs it, and keeps nothing about you unless you turn on alerts.
On your iPhone
Your location picks the nearest radar and says when rain reaches you. The places you save, your settings and the radar itself stay on your devices. The widgets and Apple Watch read what the app wrote on your iPhone.
What goes where
- Our server (run on Cloudflare) answers about a place, so it gets one: the 5 km square the rain reading is about, and the 10 km square of the spot the forecast is about (you, or a pin you drop), with your time zone for clock times. Map layers get the area on screen, in whole degrees. Severe weather warnings get your NWS forecast zone, county and fire weather zone, areas about the size of a county: the server asks the National Weather Service for their alerts, and your iPhone keeps the ones that cover where you are. It keeps nothing about these requests and logs only counts. The forecast for a 10 km square is shared by everyone in it for up to 10 minutes, and a zone's alerts for a minute.
- Apple gets a place for the forecast (Apple Weather) when our server can't answer, and for place search (Apple Maps).
- The National Weather Service gets your location, to about 10 m, when severe weather alerts are on, to find your forecast zone (once for each place you are), and the warnings where you are when our server can't answer.
- NOAA serves the radar and satellite data, which doesn't name a place.
Alerts
When you turn on rain or severe weather alerts, our server keeps what it needs to send them: this iPhone's push token from Apple, the 5 km square you're in (never your exact position), your NWS zone and county, your alert choices and time zone, and when the rain you were last alerted about started. It's deleted when you turn alerts off, when Apple says the token no longer works, or after 30 days without the app checking in. Backups hold it for up to 30 more days.
